Let's use Thermal paste to recreate a slower computer on a new computer

I had a great thing recently. I got one new PC for free. It was a 2012 high-end PC with CPU (i5), RAM (16GB), GPU (Radeon 6850) and SSD (250GB). Even if it is difficult to run the latest games, but it is enough for me to be able to run high-performance video editing (Premiere etc.) without problems.
In fact, my brother was planning to throw away this usable PC. Because it was loud noise for a year ago, it was restarted in the middle of the operation, and the power did not turn on at the end. I thought I could save this PC. So I collected and experimented various information and succeeded in completely reviving PC. It was not a simple resurrection, but it made almost perfect speed at the time of purchase. I try to keep the trial and error process that I tried until I saved my computer.

1. Why your computer is slow (Software perspective)

[Cases]

- Unnecessary debris files (residue from program install / uninstall)
- When the hard disk capacity is full (I heard that the ideal capacity is 80% or less)
- Malicious code (malicious programs running in the background wasting system resources)

[Resolution]

- System Optimization : CCleaner, Vaccine program
- Empty hard disk space
- Formatting and initializing your computer

It is most effective to format and initialize the computer rather than any other method. However, there may be cases when the computer is formatted but the PC is slow.(The speed of the computer is a little faster, but it is accurate that it is not as fast as when you first bought the computer.)
I suspected there was a problem with my computer hardware.

2. Why your computer is slow (Hardware perspective)

[Cases]

- Parts popping sound
- Burning odor
- Computer booting alarm tone
- PC does not turn on

Hardware failures can be checked relatively easily through a number of abnormalities. However, these phenomena are failures that can no longer be operated.
What I really want is that the PC is working normally but the PC is slowing down.

3. Why your computer is slow (Temperature and importance of cleaning)

I accidentally found the cause while cleaning my computer dust. I had to remove the CPU fan and the cooling pin to remove the dust and reassemble it, and then I felt the CPU usage rises abnormally. I ran only one Internet Explorer, and the CPU usage was 100%, and I could feel the PC slowing down.
I used the Core Temp program to accurately check CPU utilization and temperature. You can use this program to check the temperature per CPU core. You can download the program for free and the download link is as follows(www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp)
The core temperature during idle was 70-80 degrees. Even with a single program running, the core temperature quickly rose to over 90 degrees and the PC slowed down.(Internet search results indicate that the normal idle temperature is below 50 degrees.)

I was looking for a symptom similar to my PC. I got to see the related search term thermal paste(grease). The thermal paste is a gray creamy substance. This cream is applied between the CPU chip and the cooling pin.
Applying a thermal paste can seem like a very trivial job. But this is very important. Missing this process can directly affect your PC.

The cooling pin absorb heat generated by the CPU chip, and use a cooling fan to dissipate heat. There is a very narrow gap between the CPU chip and the cooling pin as shown below.

Because of this narrow gap, the heat generated by the CPU chip can not be transferred directly to the cooling pin. That's why we use thermal paste. The thermal paste fills the void space between the CPU chip and the cooling fins and serves as a conduit for heat transfer.
Thermal paste is a creamy material that hardens after a long period of time. My old PC has not been able to replace the thermal paste for more than five years, and it is likely to cause problems.(In the worst case, the CPU chip may overheat and die completely.)

In addition, the graphics card should be applied with thermal paste. Graphics cards also have a lot of heat, so they have fan and cooling pins like CPU.
But the graphics card is not a single chip like a CPU, but a lot of chips. In this case, it is more efficient to use a tape-shaped product called a thermal pad than to apply a thermal paste to each chip.

Now that you know the theory, let's actually replace the thermal paste.

4. Practice: cleaning my computer really hard!

I bought several more products to clean it completely.
- Dust remover: Compressed air injection (like a portable compressor)
- WD-40: FAN lubricant role
- Thermal Grease: Main item of this cleaning
- Small brush: For dust removal

I used a portable compressor to remove dust on the narrow cooling fins and remove the dust on the part surface with a brush. And I used the WD lubricant on the FAN's motors to ease the tough feeling. I disassembled the power supply directly and removed all the dust. I cleaned it for almost 2 hours. And as a result, I achieved satisfactory results.

The result of using PC all day after all cleaning is as follows.

[Core temperature]

- During idle: 20 ~ 30 degrees (60% more than the previous temperature drop)
- During a program execution(like a Chrome) : 30~40 degrees
- During movie making(using Adobe premiere) : 70~80 degrees

[My own experience]

- Speed up to the same level as PC purchase
- High-performance operation(like movie making) does not raise the temperature more than 90 degrees
- FAN returns stably (assuming that the overall temperature of the computer is low, the CPU chip is overheated, the sensor responds, and the fan is spinning)

This is not a difficult task. For beginners, it may be difficult to separate the CPU and cooling fins, but you can find them on YouTube.
If you have been purchasing a PC for more than two years and have never cleaned it before, I recommend replacing the thermal paste. (Indeed, graphic workers and those who enjoy high-performance games do this every year)
It was a good opportunity to know that slowing down the PC was not because of the time, but because of the lack of cleaning and maintenance(and interest).
